The present listing on Devon dialect was prepared for the local launch of the British Library initiative Unlocking our sound heritage, a National Sound Archive project to preserve the region's sound archives. It aims to take oral history back centuries before the era of recorded sound and attempt to discover not just what was said, but how it was said, recovering the native speech of the region in the days before before standard English and the mass media started to threaten the survival of linguistic diversity. The listing is arranged in chronological order and bringing the writings of individual authers together under the date of their first publications. There is a listing of sound recordings held in the Westcoutry Studies Library at the end of the page. There are separate listings of periodical and newspaper articles and of works relating mainly to dialect wrtings for other counties in the south west of England.

Caxton, William. Eneydos [preface] / William Caxton. — Westminster : William Caxton, 1490. —
Caxton's prologue shows an awareness of the diversity of spoken English: "For we englysshe men ben borne vnder the domynacyon of the mone, whiche is neuer stedfaste, but euer wauerynge, wexynge one season, and waneth & dyscreaseth another season. And that comyn englysshe that is spoken in one shyre varyeth from a nother. In so moche that in my dayes happened that certayn marchauntes were in a shippe in Tamyse, for to haue sayled ouer the see into Zelande, and for lacke of wynde, thei taryed atte Forlond, and wente to lande for to refreshe them; And one of theym named sheffelde, a mercer, cam in-to an hows and axed for mete ; and specyally he axyd after eggys. And the goode wyf answerde, that she coude speke no frenshe. And the marchaunt was angry, for he also coude speke no frenshe, but wolde haue hadde egges, and she vnderstode hym not. And thenne at laste a nother sayd that he wolde haue eyren. Then the good wyf sayd that she vnderstod hym wel. Loo, what sholde a man in thyse dayes now wryte, egges or eyren. Certaynly it is harde to playse euery man, by cause of dyuersite & chaunge of langage."

The dialects of medieval England / Exeter : Exeter Working Papers in Book History, 2021. — 1 map ; JPG file
"When Caxton was printing there was no standard English. A standard ""King's English"" was to be developed in the course of the 16th century by printers, just as a standard High German language evolved under the influence of Martin Luther's printed translation of the Bible.

Printing speeded up a process that had already started. The location of the court and commerce in London and the only two English universities in Oxford and Cambridge fell within the region where the East Midland dialect was spoken, and this dialect formed the basis of a national standard. By the middle of the sixteenth century characters began to appear in drama speaking a form of ""Mummerset"", normally based on the South Western dialect, establishing non-standard speakers as figures of fun. Lock, Peter, 1688-1728. The introduction to the ninth edition, dated January 1782 claims that the works were "originally made about the beginning of the present century, by a blind itinerant fidler, (one Peter Lock, of North-Moulton or its neighbourhood,) who was a man of some humour, and tho' his skill & dexterity as a musician is said to have recommended him to the notice of the great, his more commo converse with the lower class of people gave him frequent opportunities of hearing and observing their phrases and diction; [...]". This has not prevented the work from being attribibuted to Andrew Brice, the first printer of the text, William Hole, the local clergyman, and Benjamin Bowring. Lamplugh pages 10-14

Carew, Bampfylde Moore, 1690–1758. The adventurous life of Bampfyle Moore Carew, which appeared in many editions and versions in the 18th and 19th centuries, provides in many copes an insight into another non-standard English which circulated in Devon at the time. The "cant" dictionary represents a slang or jargon rather than a dialect which was used among the gipsies and other itinerants that Carew frequented. It is significant that this glossary does not appear in the earliest Exeter editions of his life, but in the editions first published in London, and the terms show little evidence of Devon dialect influence on the vocabulary. The accounts of Carew's life and the authorship of the memoirs are unreliable. His life dates are often given as 1693-1770, but it is known that he was baptised in Bickleigh near Tiverton 23 September 1690 and was buried there on 28 June 1758. He married Mary Gray at Stoke Damerel on 29 December 1733 and a son, named Theodore after his father, was baptised in Bickleigh 15 December 1734 and buried two days later. A daughter named Mary is named in a vagrancy order issued at Sherborne, Dorset, dated 21 November 1745. This casts doubt on Carew's claim that he travelled with Charles Edward Stuart, the Young Pretender, accompanying him back through England to Carlisle and Derby. The Young Pretender entered Carlisle 10 November 1745 and reached Derby on 4 December 1745, exactly the time when Carew and his family were arrested as vagrants at Sherborne in Dorset. How much reliance can also be placed on his adventures with gipsies and his exploits in America is also open to doubt. It is perhaps significant that the Oxford dictionary of national biography lists him as an impostor.

Carew, Bampfylde Moore, 1693–1759. The life and adventures of Bampfylde-Moore Carew, the noted Devonshire stroller and dog-stealer; as related by himself, during his passage to the plantations in America. Palmer, Mary, 1716-1794. Mary Palmer was was the eldest daughter of Samuel Reynolds, master of the Plympton Erle grammar school, and elder sister of the painter Sir Joshua Reynolds. She was was the author of A Devonshire dialogue, considered by the Dictionary of national biography in 1895 to be the "best piece of literature in the vernacular of Devon". Written in the middle of the 18th century after her marriage to Sir John Palmer (1708–1770) of Great Torrington, a lawyer, it was shown to friends and extracts were published in periodicals during her lifetime, without being attributed to her. A portion appeared in 1837 with a glossary by her grandson James Frederick Palmer (1803–1871). A more complete version was edited by her daughter, the painter Theophila Gwatkin, in 1839, and another edition was published in 1869. Lamplugh, pages 15-20 ; Wakelin.

Pindar, Peter 1738-1819. Peter Pindar was the pen-name of John Wolcot who was baptised at Dodbrooke, near Kingsbridge. In 1767 he went as physician to Sir William Trelawny, Governor of Jamaica. Wolcott returned to England and took holy orders in 1769, later abandoning the Church, resuming his medical career in Truro, where he discovered the artistic talents of John Opie. In 1780 Wolcot went to London and began writing satires. The first objects of his attentions were the members of the Royal Academy, but he later turned his attention to the King and Queen. In 1786 he published The Lousiad, a heroi-comic poem and he also attacked James Boswell, Hannah More, and the printer John Nichols. His poem on the royal visit to Exeter is a rare foray into Devonshire dialect, but it had its imitators, including the anonymous Royal progress to Maidstone. Lamplugh, pages 20-24. —

Baird, Henry, 1830?-1881. Nathan Hogg. — He claimed to be a native of Starcross, his parents being farmers. He was placed in a solicitor’s office in Exeter, probably Messrs. Kennaway and Buckingham. There he began writing his letters in verse "to his Brither Jan" in the Devonshire dialect, which first brought him into notice. These letters were signed “Nathan Hogg”, the name by which he was most generally known. They first apeared in the columns of the Western Times. He moved to Plymouth to join the reporting staff of the Plymouth mail. While there he contributed to the newspaper several satires in verse. After a year or two at Plymouth, he returned to Exeter, and was engaged as reporter on the Western Times. Prince Louis Lucien Bonaparte, who had devoted much time and attention to the subject of dialects, was so much struck with Baird’s Letters which had been published in 1847, that he visited the author in Exeter, where they had a long conversation at the New London Hotel. One result of this visit was the publication of a new series of Nathan Hogg’s poems, including Mucksy Lane: a short story in the Devonshire dialect, with a dedication to the Prince by the author, dated Exeter, June 9, 1863. The Prince also commissioned Baird to write The Song of Solomon in the Devonshire dialect. "Mr. Baird set out his special work with intense interest and completed his task within a very short time. On presenting the result to the Prince, he received highly commendatory letters in return." He left the Western Times, married, and conducted a second-hand bookshop in St. Martin’s Lane. But it was commercially not a success, and he moved to London, where he obtained an engagement with a news agency , and was appointed its reporter at the Old Bailey. In this position he remained until ill health prevented him from doing any work. He died in St Thomas Hospital shortly after his arrival, aged 50, on 3 May 1881. Daniel, Henry John, 1818-1889. He was born at Lostwithiel, and died at Salford in October, 1889. As a school-boy he was very refractory, and was expelled to a school at Saltash, from which he was also expelled as hopelessly disobedient and illiterate. For a short time he studied for a doctor at Chard, but on the death of his father when he was about sixteen years, he found himself amply provided for, although his temperament led him into habits of intemperance and thriftlessness. He later became studious, and studied the classics. He published his first volume, Hours of Solitude in 1838. He wrote a continuation of Byron's Don Juan, only one canto of which was published and was the author of more than 1,000 short poetical pieces, mmost of which were never collected into book form, many of them "illustrative of the Cornish dialect". He contemplated publishing his collected poems, by subscription, but although he had many promises of support, he never carried out his intention. Wright, W. H. K, Westcountry poets ; Lamplugh, pages 29-30. -

Elworthy, Frederick Thomas, 1830–1907. 1872 - 1905. — The philologist and antiquary was born at Wellington, Somerset. He was educated at a private school at Denmark Hill, London, but was middle-aged when he began to pursue his interest in the dialect and antiquities of west Somerset and east Devon. His paper "The dialect of west Somerset" was read before the Philological Society in 1875, and two further papers, with a contribution by James A. H. Murray, were published in 1877. Murray went to Wellington to clarify points of dialect pronunciation; the visit was the first of many. Murray valued him greatly for his practical help on the New English dictionary and the family contributed over 15,000 quotations for the dictionary. The West Somerset word-book, published in 1886, a glossary of some 900 pages occupied him for more than ten years. He also wrote studies of folk magic and popular superstition. He was a member of the council of the Philological Society, and from 1891 to 1895 edited the Somersetshire Archaeological and Natural History Society's Proceedings. He also contributed to the Transactions of the Devonshire Association, for which he was recorder of dialect from 1881-1905. Oxford dictionary of national biography. -

Chope, Richard Pearse, 1862-1938. Born in Farford near Bideford. He was educated at West Buckland School and Trinity College, Cambridge 1881-1884. He worked in the Patent Office, being in charge of the printing section, retiring in 1922. He joined the Devonshire Association in 1896, and wrote his first paper for the Transactions in 1902, editing the Transactions from 1928 to 1930, and preparing the reports on folklore from 1925 to 1936. He also edited the Yearbook of the London Devonian Association and Devon and Cornwall notes and queries. In 1891 he wrote The Dialect of Hartland for the English Dialect Society, and assisted in the production of the English dialect dictionary. On the speech of his native county he was the foremost living authority. In 1902 he wrote the Story of Hartland, printed it on a wooden press of his own making, and published the book himself. He contributed a series of monthly notes to the Hartland chronicle. He lived a bachelor for many years at Fosfelle, a farmhouse close to Farford, the home of his early friend, John Lane, the publisher at the sign of the Bodley Head, "who had done so much for the young and lonely student who went to London in 1884". Sound recordings

Urlau, Kurt. Die Sprache des dialekt Dichters William Barnes (Dorsetshire) / Kurt Urlau. — Berlin : Thesis (Ph.D), 1921. — 53 pages ; 22 cm. —

Sound recording of dialect was in its infancy when Kurt Urlau presented his thesis in 1921. He had access to a recording of the poems of William Barnes and transcribed them into a version of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), giving the original printed version below. He notes that the pronunication on the gramophone record might differ from that indicated by the orthography of Barnes which gives below the transcription. He also states: "With regard to the pronunication of the consonants, it should be noted that the "speaking machine" only renders them imperfectly. German and Scandinavian linguists have shown great interest in the Old English of the Exeter Book, local place-names, and regional dialects, a tradition of philological study that dates back to the time of the brothers Grimm. The Westcountry Studies Library collected a number of dialect recordings, some of which are listed below. It is to be hoped that the National Sound Archive will make even more available and that, together with the heritage of printed material, there will be a rich source for linguistic, literary and sociological research in Exeter.
