local studies and heritage libraries in Exeter.

For the first time, the history of the book, and published literature of all kinds in Exeter and Devon, is traced from the dawn of literacy to the present day, in a publication linked to Exeter's designation by UNESCO as a City of Literature, the only city in Britain to receive this accolade in 2019.

Exeter has been a literate city for two millennia, and over that period the written word has reached us in a variety of ways, from illuminated manuscripts, through printed texts to digital media. The book traces the various forms in which we have received the written word, from Celtic coiners, through Roman graffiti writers, scribes in monastic scriptoria, printers working their heavy manual presses, to the mass media and web designers. It charts the development of booksellers, publishers, libraries and archives and how they relate to the authors that create the texts and the community of readers. It traces the complex networks that have evolved to facilitate the transmission of texts, from scholars corresponding at a distance in medieval times and the Renaissance, to post boys distributing newspapers on horseback in the eighteenth century, and the World Wide Web at the end of the second millennium. It shows how there is a continuity over time; printing did not put an end to manuscripts and the internet has not killed the printed book. Above all it traces the progressive democratisation of the written word from a time when literacy was the preserve of a small educated elite, to an era when everyone can hold the knowledge of the world in the palm of their hand.

The illustration on the front cover and title page is of the book fool from Alexander Barclay's verse translation of Sebastian Brant's Ship of fools, the earliest printed book by a Devonian writer, first published in 1509. The book fool is the inspiration for the author of this book, an old bibliofool who has spent more than half a century exploring the history of the book, first in Europe, then in London and the English provinces, finally settling in Devon, Normandy and Weimar. For almost thirty years, from 1977 to 2015 he was Devon's local studies librarian, based in the Westcountry Studies Library in Exeter. He has published books and articles on a wide range of book and paper history topics and has lectured in Britain, France, Germany, Hungary and Romania. Apart from the Exeter working papers in book history website, he also maintains the Devon bibliography, Etched on Devon's memory, Maya miscellany and Manhole miscellany websites. He is trustee of the Kent Kingdon Bequest and the Friends of Devon's Archives grant making charities and works on the blue plaques team of Exeter Civic Society.

Exeter Book Market
Anyone who claims that the book is dead should have been taken by the ear and dragged into the hugely successful Exeter Book Market held on 20 June 2021 in a huge barn of a place within a stone's throw of Powderham Castle. A large throng of people of all ages surrounded the well-packed stalls of a dozen independent booksellers from south Devon. After marking time for a while because of Covid-19 the Exeter City of Literature project has hit the ground running with many other exciting projects under way.

Exeter Cultural Strategy
It is remarkable what passes one by. In the days long ago, when Devon actually had designated local studies library staff, Exeter Culture's 2019 publication Exeter : a place-based cultural strategy (2019-2024) would almost certainly have been picked up. As it is, neither the Westcountry Studies Library, nor the University Library, nor the Devon and Exeter Institution Library has discovered it, nor has it been listed by the British national bibliography. I only stumbled upon it at the Exeter Book Market. Reading the text of the strategy it would seem that the Westcountry Studies Library does not figure in the city's literary landscape or cultural heritage. Insofar as it is seen as anything nowadays the Westcountry Studies Library, the region's largest collection of local literature, is seen as part of the problem rather than part of the answer. There is no mention of Devon County Council, or of the South West Heritage Trust, although there is a passing mention of Libraries Unlimited, because Hugh McCann's "Listening Booth" was installed in Exeter Library by the Arts Council.

Libraries working together
And talking of things passing us by, I looked into Exeter Library the other day to see what local information the visitor could find now that the tourist information centre in Dix's Field had closed - I gather there will be nothing anywhere near the spanking new bus station and visitors have to find their way down to the quay (not many people arrive in Exeter by boat these days). Among the half-dozen shelves of local items (a display that was topped by Crediton, Tiverton and other town centre libraries in Devon I have visited recently) I noticed a lending copy of a chunky privately printed book by David T. R. Lewis published in 2017: A history of the Edwinsford and Clovelly communities. This was inscribed by the author and appears to have been donated. Details are included in the list at the end of this issue. It was picked up by the British national bibliography, but not by the Devon Heritage Centre, the Devon and Exeter Institution or the University of Exeter. In the "good old days" before austerity a monthly booklist was circulated in an attempt to gather together information about new local publications. Is there any way in which libraries across Devon could exchange information about new local publications now that the Westcountry Studies Library has no designated staff? Back then branch libraries needed the Westcountry Studies Library to help gather the local literary heritage, now the Westcountry Studies Library - and other libraries in Exeter - need all the help they can get from each other. And such an information exchange should not just cover historical material, but current material that is being produced to build communities and protect their environment as we emerge from Covid.

Top marks to Mark
That is to Mark Norman of Crediton library for organising an excellent series of local history Zoom events for local history groups in the library's catchment area culminating in a Crediton History Day on 7 July. This event included "Our Region Revealed" the digitisation project at the Devon and Exeter Institution, inspiringly presented by Emma Laws, Director of Collections and Research which opens to all the prints and drawings collection at the Institution. Mark Norman himself talked on "Arthur Richardson, the English Stradivarius” charting the career of the highly respected Crediton-based violin maker whose blue plaque is on the library wall. Church graffiti in Devon were discussed by by Pru Manning. The Devon Historic Graffiti Survey, organised by the Devon Archaeological Society aims to record and catalogue surviving graffiti in Devon’s 600 churches. Martin and Shan Graebe gave an talk, illustrated by songs, based on Martin's award-winning book As I walked out: Sabine Baring-Gould and his search for the folk Songs of Devon and Cornwall. Others throughout Devon have also been organising Zoom events, but this series is among the best. Incidentally, there are plans for Exeter Civic Society to host another Zoom event on 1 October to dedicate the blue plaque in Exeter to Sabine Baring-Gould which was quietly unveiled on the eve of lockdown.

A visitor attraction: printing for tourists
The Centre for Printing History and Culture, based in Birmingham hosted a fascinating two-day webinar on 20 and 21 July, a virtual incarnation (perhaps an oxymoron) of a seminar due to be held for real in Appleby in July 2020 but deferred for a year. One advantage of Zoom is that an international attendance was possible, with presenters from Sweden and America, even if the latter had to get up at two in the morning to make her presentation. The theme is of great interest to Devon as an area one of whose main drivers is the tourist industry.

The first session SOUVENIRS included Tess Goodman, talking on "Fancy wood work of the district" status souvenirs from Victorian Scotland. This dealt with printed souvenirs aimed at the upper end of the market, including books bound in wood, often from trees felled in tourist sites such as Abbotsford, Sir Walter Scott's home, and often decorated with tartan patterns, items meant to be displayed flat on coffee tables rather than stood on shelves. Stephen Ferguson's presentation "Wish you were here" the postcard in Irish tourism showed how Ireland had developed the postcard, originating in Germany in 1869 and given a new lease of life in the UK in 1902 when the back was divided to make it possible to have both address and a message. His presentation of folksy Irish scenes, the colours often heightened to give the Irish children authentic red hair, was given an added authority as he had worked many years in the Irish Post Office. Topographical prints were the subject of  Ian Maxted's presentation, "Drives &c in and about Torquay", an early manuscript travel journal illustrated by line-engraved vignettes held by the Westcountry Studies Library dating from 1863-1864. Another participant said that he owned a similar journal from almost the same date, compiled by an Exeter visitor to the Lakes. He hopes to bring it down during August so that they can be compared.

The second session MAKING VISTAS started with Appleby bookseller Barry McKay: "Leporello albums of Glaser Prints", a short-lived method of providing tourists with souvenir views of local attractions. These were named after Louis Glaser, a Leipzig publisher who had perfected the technique around 1880. From then until around 1910 the little albums, usually with red covers were widely published in the British Isles by publishers such as E&S (Eyre and Spottiswoode?), Charles Reynolds and Co and Joseph Levi and Son, but always printed in Germany. The images were based on photographs, redrawn onto a lithographic plate and glazed after printing, a strange cross between engraving and photographs. They were often issued as "leporellos" a term I had not encountered, having called them screenfolds; there are many examples in the Westcountry Studies Library.  And what to call the technique? There is no definitive answer; two suggestions are autophotolitho or pseudophotlitho. Shiljia Yu spoke on "A sense of exclusiveness in print", the depiction of watering resorts through paper peepshows, popular between about 1825 and 1860. I was amused by the title of one example, the Cheltenhamorama, published by Henry Lamb, who ran a "fancy repository" in the spa town in 1832. Paper technology was developed further here, the screenfold developing into the accordion-fold to give a series of ever more distant perspectives through the peep-hole, rather like a stage-set.

The third session, appropriately on THE LAKE DISTRICT where the conference was originally due to be held, started with Chris Donaldson: "From the Lake Counties to the English Lakes" analysing from titles of books how print culture helped define the Lake District. A similar exercise could be undertaken for our region: West, South West, Wessex, West Country, Westcountry. Diana Patterson spoke on Peter Crosthwaite’s tourist maps, the first accurate maps of the lakes, which appeared in the late 18th century. Liz Woodham celebrated Alfred Wainwright’s wonderful pictorial guides to the English Lake District, which he modestly described as "nothing more than my own personal notebook", one of the finest manuscript publications since the works of William Blake, and never out of print, even in the age of Google maps.

The fourth session ENGLISHMEN ABROAD contained Susan May: The marvels of Rome, the first English translation of the twelfth-century Latin guidebook, published in 1889 by Ellis and Elvey of London. By contrast Federica Mirra decribed the development of Thames Town: re-imagining Stratford Upon Avon in Shanghai in what has become a sort of theme park, although designed as a residential area. It deserves a virtual visit, if you can bear to watch through the adverts on YouTube.

The fifth session ARCHIVES started with Carina Broman: "Why not visit Britain?" which she described as "graphic comments on printed advertising and tourism information for Swedes" but gave an interesting insight into the problems encountered in organising the extensive ephemera collections in the Kungliga biblioteket, the National Library of Sweden.  Emma Minns, curator of the extensive collections at the Department of Graphic Design and Communications at Reading University, spoke of the work of the department in making accessible the extensive collection of tourism memorabilia, particularly a recently received collection of aviation ephemera. Andrew Mcilwraith suveyed the changing styles over 140 years of plans provided for visitors at the British Museum and the V&A.

The sixth session ADVERTISING AND PROMOTION saw the journalist Anthony Quinn give us a "whirlwind tour of tourism in magazines from 1881 to 2019" drawn from his extensive collection of magazines, ranged in boxes behind him as he spoke. Lisa Peters spoke on newspapers for tourists,  the visitor newspapers in Victorian Britain which gave extensive lists of visitors. They seemed to enjoy a special vogue in Welsh seaside resorts, but she also included Bright's intelligencer, an Ilfracombe publication, although the Torquay and Tor directory was not included, presumably because it was not yet digitised.

The final session was somewhat truncated but included two items designated SPECIAL INTEREST: Rose Roberto, "Imagining the Alps during the nineteenth century: tales of the Great St Bernard and peaks, passes, and glaciers", which dealt extensively with the activities and publications of the Alpine Club, founded in 1857. The webinar concluded appropriately with a presentation by Caroline Archer-Parré, co-director of the Centre for Printing History and Culture at Birmingham City University on "typographic tourists", making printing itself the target of tourism, from the 18th century printing establishments such as the Clarendon Press at Oxford, or Thomas Gent in York and Scarborough which provided tours and enabled the visitor to pull the press and leave with a personally typeset keepsake, to the presses set up on the ice during frost fairs, the inclusion of presses on floats in pageants, for example in Truro, where the Royal Cornwall Gazette paraded a press in 1856 to celebrate the end of the Crimean War, on through the Great Exhibition of 1851, the International Exhibition of 1862 and the Caxton celebration exhibition of 1877. The series of International Printing Machinery and Allied Trade exhibitions continued until 2017, culminating in the Printing and the mind of man exhibitions at the British Museum and Earls Court in 1963. And finally we reach the printing museums scattered across the country, but facing problems during the Covid period.

A mind-broadening and enjoyable event - and it was good that Exeter could be represented among the delegates.

Devon bibliography, recent additions
Having just completed a mammoth session searching the British national bibliography for the past three months I thought it might be useful to list all the recent publications I had gathered together over that period - just to indicate the range of material covered. It includes books from Devon publishers, not necessarily with Devon content but omits many official publications as I have not undertaken a recent trawl for this type of material. There are more than 220 titles in all, but the true number is swollen as many publications have separate printed and digital editions. Nor does it include the many additions and amendments I have made to earlier Devon publications. I have updated the bibliography for 2021 and 2020 and will probably withdraw this current listing when the next newsletter appears.
