Devon in the 1920s. On-line resources.

This is a revised version of a presentation given at the launch of the Devon History Society's "Devon in the 1920s" project on 24 April 2021. It aims to provide participants with a selection of publications from the 1920s which are freely available on-line and can be consulted or read through at home. The order and emphasis of the listing has been changed and items are included for which there is no image, but the link still reaches a full text version of the work listed. The present page is not a replacement for the fuller listings of published resources which have been provided by the Devon bibliography and the Devon Heritage Centre and give locations of a much wider range of publications in libraries and archives in Devon and beyond.
Directories are a major source for local studies. County directories are available for 1923, 1926 and 1930, but none are digitised on-line for the 1920s. Kelly’s contains detailed information for every community in the county. The image below shows the cover of the 1923 directory but the page shown is from the 1919 directory, the latest to be digitised, and with the following page indicates the level of detail for Newton St Cyres, whose population in 1911 was 677. Directories are also available for individual towns in Devon. Details are given in the fuller listings.

Guidebooks give a picture of the county often slanted to tourists rather than the local community. This presentation illustrates only some of those that have been digitised. Guidebooks can also cover regions or individual communities in Devon. There is a rich collection in the Westcountry Studies Library extending back to the early 19th century. Ward Lock red guides can only be dated by the advertising supplements, which provide valuable detail on the tourist industry of the 1920s.

Fiction, poetry, drama.Local novelists can often provide a feel of the period, especially when their works are set locally. Many of the works of literature in this section are digitised from American editions which are not held in Devon libraries. Agatha Christie’s family home was in Torquay and she only moved to Greenway in 1938. About fifteen of Agatha Christie’s crime novels are set in Devon.

The Devon and Cornwall Record Society have been publishing editions of historical records since the start of the 20th century. In the 1920s they were concentrating on parish registers and their regular publications were made up of sections containing several works in progress, as can be seen by the wrapper reproduced with the Topsham transcript. While the items relate to earlier centuries, they do provide evidence of the intellectual life on Devon in the 1920s.

Grey literature. This term covers official publications, but also the semi-published reports and surveys of official, academic or finacial institutions. Beolw is an example of a publication by one of the research bodies operating within the county in the days before universities had been established. Many papers produced through these bodies are also to be found in journals issued by national and some local organisations. Publications by a local scientist are also listed as examples of research by Devon academics.

Maps. Most of Devon has been surveyed at a scale of 25 inches to a mile (1:2,500) but the Ordnance Survey was undertaking little large-scale mapping in Devon during the 1920s, the bulk of the county having been covered by the survey of 1906. Know Your Place: Devon is the county’s main mapping system today and it includes many of the early maps digitised by the National Library of Scotland. This is also the source of the map shown here, published by the Scottish firm of John Bartholomew and Son. Bartholomew, John & Son. Half inch to a mile. 36: South Devon. - Edinburgh: Bartholomew, 1923. Copies: WSL ; National Library of Scotland. Subjects: Devon. Exeter. Maps. 1923. -
And finally …
Illustrations. A picture is worth a thousand words. The Devon Heritage Centre and other community archives hold rich resources. The Devon bibliography provides on-line access to some 1,200 Devon images for the 1920s, chiefly watermarked images from the Francis Frith Collection at the web page Devon photographs from the 1920s.

The Devon bibliography contains more than 100,000 records for published documents, printed, digital, and manuscript, recording two millennia of the county’s literary heritage. Most of these items can be found in the main libraries in Devon:

  Westcountry Studies Library
  Devon and Exeter Institution
  University of Exeter
  Exeter Cathedral Library
  Barnstaple Library
  Plymouth Library
  Torquay Library

In addition there are important local collections with museums, community archives, and local studies groups across the county. Please help the old bibliofool to make the bibliography as complete as possible by recording publications, old and new, which may have been missed.
